It’s always been Newton.
Gregorian Rugs had stints in Connecticut, Wellesley, Cape Cod and Boston – but for the family-owned business, Newton has always been home sweet home.
Incorporated in 1934, the company has been importing and selling rugs from India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey ever since.
Today its offerings include about 4,000 stocked rugs, and clearing and repair services.
A family tradition
Scott Gregorian, the third-generation owner, said it all started with some romance.
His Connecticut-based grandfather, Arthur, followed Gregorian’s grandmother to Wellesley College and set up shop.
“He moved here in the early 1930s,” Gregorian said of the Lower Falls location.
“This is our only location now. We’ve had other locations in Connecticut, Boston and the Cape, but people still traveled here to see what else there was. It was our biggest spot,” he said.
Gregorian’s father John took over after Arthur, and Scott Gregorian has now been running the business for four years.
“We have third generation customers, and maybe some fourth generation,” he said.
“We’ve been selling handmade oriental rugs for 77 years,” Gregorian told the TAB, adding that business is steady but not as booming as it was in the 1990s.
He said the Washington Street location currently houses about 4,000 rugs – which range in size from 1 foot by 1 foot to 13 feet by 24 feet.
From rounds to runners, Gregorian said well-kempt rugs can last hundreds of years.
“A nice, solid piece in the mid-range that’s taken care of and cleaned every 3 to 5 years at least, can last 50 to 60 years. Some can last hundreds of years,” he said.
He said rugs can start at a few hundred dollars and go up to tens of thousands of dollars. The average price for a rug at his shop runs between $1,500 and $2,500, he said.
Gregorian recognizes people might not be interested in big investments, which makes maintenance all the more important.
“It’s a good idea to get a rug cleaned. Small damages become big damages, and small repairs become big repairs,” he said.
Gregorian said employees will go to the customer’s house, move around furniture and take the rug back to the shop for cleaning or repairs. Cleaning takes 7 to 10 days.
Always at your service
Gregorian Rugs is open 7-days a week.

Gregorian said they’re dedicated to quality.
“We believe there are a lot of people out there to sell the fashionable stuff that might not last so long,” he said. “We provide the best quality we can, and believe in providing something that lasts.”
